Democrat Vicente Gonzalez Defeats Republican Mayra Flores in Highly-Anticipated Race

Democrat Vicente Gonzalez has defeated Republican incumbent Mayra Flores in Texas’ 34th district. Flores, who had become quite popular on the right after winning a special election in June, had an uphill battle after the maps were redrawn.

Earlier this year, redistricting reshaped Flores’ district to include a much larger chunk of San Antonio, which is a blue city. This made it easier for her opponents to garner enough support to unseat her.

“In Flores’ special election race, the congresswoman ran under previous district lines where Biden won by +4 percentage points in 2020, however under new district lines, the +16 Biden district is far more friendly to Democrats than before,” according to Fox News.

Similar to Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), who also won his race, Gonzalez is considered to be more of a moderate and has parted ways with his party when it comes to issues like energy production and border security.
