Vice President’s recent “trip” to the border was less of a trip and more about political theater. She made a speech in El Paso, Texas blaming the Trump Administration for inheriting a “tough situation” and said that the Biden White House has made “extreme progress” on handling illegal immigration, despite skyrocketing numbers.
She even tried to tout their response to the record numbers they’ve been getting at the border, even though the surge in migration is a result of the Biden Administration. “In five months, we’ve made progress. There’s much more work to be done, but we’ve made progress,” Harris told reporters.
Her team also insisted that the trip was not forced by Trump’s planned visit or GOP pressure. Symone Sanders, a senior adviser for Harris, told reporters that the administration does not take cues from “Republican criticism” or from the former president of the United States.
“We have said, over a number of different occasions … that she would go to the border. She has been before. She would go again. She would go when it was appropriate when it made sense,” Sanders said.
After recent trips to Guatemala and Mexico, Harris’s absence from the border became a national issue and interviews with her just got awkward. Trump announced he would be visiting the border with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, which put VP Harris in an “even more challenging spot.”Trump and Abbott would be touring border facilities and talking plans to build border barriers inside the Texas-Mexico border, which would help Customs and Border Protection with the surge of illegal immigration.
Harris was even called out for choosing El Paso, which is more than 1,000 miles away from the part of the border that has been hit the hardest by Biden’s policies. A Washington Post reporter tweets that VP Harris should be visiting areas like Rio Grande Valley or Arizona. “In El Paso, she can be hosted by Rep. Veronica Escobar, who has been reliably supportive. In RGV, Laredo, AZ, Dem lawmakers have been critical of Biden admin, want more enforcement,” the reporter wrote.
Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar called Harris’s trip “politically safe” and said he had no idea why it has taken the Biden Administration so long to visit the border. He said that her planners probably suggested she go somewhere safer.
“If you go down to the lower Rio Grande with the high activity and you’re there with kids and families, prosecutorial discretion, where people are being released, high numbers of people crossing the border, you know, politically that’s — it’s harder to do that, I know that. I mean, that’s part of my district, but you got to do what you got to do. You just can’t, you know, just go to one place, but she does do the ‘check the box and go down to the border’ by going to El Paso,” Cuellar said.
Even a border official, who spoke to Fox News out of anonymity, blasted Harris’ sudden interest in border control and said it will be worth seeing if the trip extends beyond a rubber stamp of ‘I visited the border.’
But Harris appeared to clarify why she and her team chose El Paso, Texas, rather than cities in the Rio Grande Valley. She suggested that the choice of El Paso was meant to draw attention to Trump-era immigration policies, adding that El Paso highlights the “facets of immigration” and is where the controversial child separation policy began.
Harris was greeted by protesters lining the streets as she touched down in Texas, with protesters holding signs with slogans like “Kamala, do you hear their screams?” In reference to the children being detained by Health and Human Services detention facilities and “Trump won.” In a clip posted to social media, one protester can even be heard screaming, “You came a little too late.”
Harris even snapped at Fox News reporter Peter Doocy for the border trip delay, adding that “it’s not my first trip, I’ve been to the border many times.” Apparently, she wants to refer to the visits she made when she was a senator.
VP Harris has made it pretty obvious that she only went because of pressure from conservatives. Trump announced his trip to the border and it lit a fire under the Biden Administration. It’s a shame the amount of pressure that must be applied to get Harris to do something. Even when she does, it’s just more political theater and Trump-derangement syndrome.
