Although Vice President Kamala Harris seemed to find questions about the border crisis a laughing matter the last few times she’s been questioned about visiting, her most recent interview with Univision was anything but. Anchor Ilia Calderón pressed Harris on being selected as the border czar by President Joe Biden yet not visiting the border in person herself.
During the interview, Calderón asked Harris when she would be visiting the border in person. VP Harris told the anchor that she said she’s going to the border, in which Calderón asked again when it was going to be. Harris interjected with a brief chuckle.
“I’m not finished. I’ve said I’m going to the border. And also, if we are going to deal with the problems at the border, we have to deal with the problems that cause people to go to the border, to flee to the border. So my first trip as vice president of the United States was to go — in terms of a foreign trip — to Guatemala, to be on the ground there to address and to be informed of the root causes why are the people of Guatemala leaving,” VP Harris said.
Calderón asked again if she has a date for the trip to the border, in which Harris replied that she will keep her posted. It has been about 80 days since Harris has been tapped to deal with the crisis and has still not visited the border. This is the second time Harris drew criticism for how she handled a question about the border.
In an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt, Harris even tried to belittle the importance of a trip down there. “At some point, you know, we are going to the border. We’ve been to the border. So this whole, this whole, this whole thing about the border. We’ve been to the border. We’ve been to the border,” Harris said.
Holt replied that she hasn’t been to the border, in which Harris said with a forced laugh, “And I haven’t been to Europe. I don’t understand the point that you’re making.”
Harris has been repeatedly criticized for failing to visit the border, even though the Biden Administration’s immigration policies are what led to that mess in the first place. In announcing Harris as the border czar, Biden said there was “no one better capable of trying to organize this for us” and that she was the most qualified person for the job. But that was almost three months ago and there has been no progress on the border crisis, other than Harris thinking it is a joke.
Harris has defended her trip to Guatemala as a way of dealing with the “root causes” of migration rather than addressing the problem itself. Sen. Rick Scott pointed out that her avoidance of the border is getting extreme and that her flying over the border at 35,000 feet doesn’t count as a visit.
“Now, 123 days since taking office, it’s shocking to see the lengths to which President Biden and Vice President Harris will go to avoid seeing the border crisis for themselves. Apprehensions at the border rose above 178,000 in April alone, nearly 6,000 a day. This is about the safety of American families. We must secure the border now,” Scott urged.
White House Press secretary Jen Psaki even defended VP Harris and said that her focus is on “solutions” rather than the surge of migrants at the border.
But why would anyone else want to ask VP Harris a serious question? History shows that her response is always followed by some form of unnecessary laughter or unexplained cackling and that every question is a joke. She says whatever she wants because she has her own agenda and doesn’t care what anyone else talks about. Of course, the media is silent about that. The democratic policies on immigration are a disaster and nobody wants to admit it.
