Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey recently declared a state of emergency in the counties of Cochise, Maricopa, Pima, Pinal, Santa Cruz, and Yuma, and said he would be sending 250 members of the Arizona National Guard to the US-Mexico border. Guards will assist with medical operations in migrant facilities, install and maintain border cameras, monitor and collect data from public safety cameras, and analyze satellite imagery in smuggling corridors. They will also address the overall risk to the state and citizens regarding a surge of COVID-19 cases entering the state and limit social distancing protocols in the shelter spaces.
“The situation in our border communities is just as bad—if not worse—than the coverage we’ve been seeing. It’s become evidently clear that Arizona needs the National Guard, and the White House is aware of that. Yet, to this day, there has been no action from this administration, and it doesn’t look like they are going to act any time soon. If this administration isn’t going to do anything, then we will,” Gov. Ducey said.
Gov. Ducey shared that the situation at the border is just as bad, if not worse, than the coverage we’ve been seeing and that deploying the National Guard would be critical to dealing with this crisis. While Gov. Ducey said that he had requested the federal reimbursement to do so, others in the state, such as Attorney General Mark Brnovich, urged him to “act now and fight for the federal dollars later.”
After visiting the Yuma Sector, Gov. Ducey shared that their resources and staffing were strained and that it was evident they needed to send the Arizona National Guard to the Border and help provide assistance to both local law enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security.
The American Civil Liberties Union in Arizona, however, has said that Ducey’s actions “do nothing more than further militarize our border communities and stoke unnecessary and unjustified fear.”
But President Joe Biden has experienced a massive backlash for his handling of the border crisis, particularly after seeing more than 172,000 migrants entering the country in March alone. Gov. Ducey shared that it didn’t look like the Biden Administration would be acting any time soon and that if that administration isn’t going to do anything, then he would.
While Arizona struggles to handle the border crisis without any help from the federal government, two immigration bills have made their way for a final vote in the House of Representatives.
The H.R 1333, the No Ban Act, and H.R 1573, the Access to Counsel Act, would make it impossible to restrict the entry of national security threats and look at overwhelming and paralyzing the immigration courts with activists and open border immigration lawyers. The bills would also charge the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).
“If congressional Democrats and the Biden administration haven’t sufficiently proven how detached from reality they are on immigration matters, passing these two bills will clinch the deal for them. Just a week or so after we learned that terrorists are exploiting the Biden border crisis, the House now wants to make it easier for them to waltz in the front door by stripping presidents, current and future, of the authority to bar entry to foreign nationals based on legitimate security concerns,” said FAIR President Dan Stein.
The Biden Administration has made it clear that they want immigration lawyers and advocacy groups to profit from fraudulent claims and make the immigration courts even more unworkable. Limiting the restrictions on immigration only adds more fuel to the fire and the Biden Administration can ignore the problem all they want, it doesn’t change the fact that there is a crisis that needs to be addressed. If the federal government is going to hide, local authorities will come through and do what they need to protect their communities from foreign countries populating and controlling the state.
