President Joe Biden did not waste any time before making the latest tragic school shooting in Texas an opportunity to promote his political agenda regarding gun laws. He certainly wasn’t alone, politicians got in line to trumpet their views on restricting guns from American citizens.
But few took the opportunity Biden did to use the emotional moments to crack a tired joke in hopes, it seems, to get the public to chuckle as he ranted about standing up to the Washington D.C. gun lobby.
After asking the rhetorical question that he has asked time and time again, “What in God’s name do you need an assault weapon for except to kill someone?” The president of the United States cracked this worn joke, “Deer aren’t running through the forest with Kevlar vests on, for God’s sake.”
As the country is mourning the senseless loss of 21 lives, 19 children, and two adults, brevity is not needed. The hearts of the country are going out to the families of those who were killed at a school in Uvalde, Texas after an 18-year-old male stormed into Robb Elementary School and opened fire. He was finally gunned down when a brave U.S. Border Patrol agent reportedly rushed into the line of fire at the school and killed him.
President Biden immediately used the heart-wrenching moment to go after the gun lobby in America. The president said that it was just “wrong” that an adult could walk into a gun store and buy two modern sporting rifles. He challenged those in Washington to do what all of us “know in our gut needs to be done.”
But it is obvious that all the people do not know in their guts what needs to be done. This has been debated in the House for decades, and it will continue to be “a debate” while a Democrat is sitting in the oval office and his political party controls the U.S. federal government.
One could wonder if the Democratic Party needs the debate to hold their power more than they need to pass the laws they are debating.
Biden challenged America to have the courage to stand up to the industry. He asked questions like, “Why are we willing to live with this carnage? Why do we keep letting this happen? Where in God’s name is our backbone to have the courage to deal with it and stand up to the lobbies?”
Some in the media did not respond well to his soapbox address. Fox News host Tucker Carlson said, “The President of the United States, frail, confused, bitterly partisan, desecrating the memory of recently murdered children with tired talking points of the Democratic Party, dividing the country in a moment of deep pain rather than uniting.”
Other political commentators like Ajit Datta challenged the hypocrisy. He related Biden’s speech to those that had been given in the past by former President Barack Obama. He said, “You’re all essentially two sides of the same coin. Because if you were to really act on it, how would you ever champion this issue again?”
And Alan Bayer just could not stomach what he called the “stupid, nonsensical joke” at such a tragic moment. He asked on Twitter, “What’s wrong with this guy?”
President Joe Biden promised that he would bring unity back to Washington. But the country is more divided now than ever. The state of the union right now is no laughing matter, what we need is some serious change.
