As we reported, Donald Trump decided he didn’t love the name “Gulf of Mexico”—so he issued an executive order renaming the marginal sea “The Gulf of America.” Of course, this triggered all sorts of angst from the anti-America crowd, who were up in arms that he would do such a terrible thing.

It’s going to be interesting to see how various countries and corporations react going forward. Two companies, one from the media and one from Big Tech, have already made their decisions. Google said Monday that they were going with the change, while the Associated Press waffled somewhat and tried to have it both ways.
The tech giant said on social media Monday it will apply the name change when it has been updated in official government sources. The company also said it will start using the name Mount McKinley to refer to the mountain in Alaska currently called Denali, another renaming decision from Trump.
At this point, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg seems so desperate to get in Trump’s good graces that I wouldn‘t be surprised if he insisted on the decision.

The Associated Press, meanwhile, is taking a more weasely approach and saying they will not honor the name change, but they will mention it:
The Associated Press (AP) on Thursday announced its reporting guidelines would not uphold President Donald Trump’s decision to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
As one of the oldest news publications in the country, AP often sets the industry standard for language usage in journalism. These standards, known as AP style, have been adopted by other news outlets worldwide.
AP said it would acknowledge the name change by Trump in its reporting, but would continue to refer to the body of water as the Gulf of Mexico, which it argued more readers would recognize.
The AP did relent on the name change of Alaska’s Denali to Mount McKinley because the mountain lies solely within U.S. boundaries.

It will be interesting to see if the name change sticks, and what people/countries/corporations adopt it. In the meantime, though, it’s just fun to watch the angst in the mainstream press because you know there’s steam coming out of their ears. Naming something after America—the nerve!
