GOP Lawmakers Question CDC’s Guidance On School Mask Mandates

A group of 30 GOP legislators, including Sen. Mike Lee and Rep. Jason Smith, wrote to Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the Director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, to ask how the CDC came to its conclusion that children two years and older should wear face masks to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. This was first put forward in a March 2020 recommendation, which many states and counties have based mask mandate age requirements on.

The lawmakers also questioned President Biden’s January 21, 2021 Executive Order, which required that all airports, commercial aircrafts, bus services, and other forms of public transportation comply with the the CDC’s mask-wearing guidelines. It only exempts children under the age of two years. The U.S requirement for masks on children stands out among other nations. In Swiss, children under the age of 12 are exempt from mask mandates. Children under the age of 11 in France and Great Britain are also mask-free.

The implementation of these recommendations have made it almost impossible for parents of children with disabilities to comply with. Many parents and children have been removed from flights and banned from future travel, simply due to their toddler’s refusal to wear a mask. The lawmakers write how these unfortunate events have resulted in increased social isolation and negative mental health consequences.

The letter cites a study from the Association of American Medical Colleges, which found that children younger than age five account for approximately 6% of the population but only 2% of the total coronavirus cases. It concludes that COVID-19 infections show a significantly lower susceptibility to infection for children aged under 10 years compared to adults given the same exposure.

Another study found that children have 56% lower probability of infection as opposed to adults after contact with another infected individual. Children and adolescents younger than 20 years have 44% lower odds of reinfection compared with adults 20 years and older.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci made a similar assessment last November and found a minimal spread among children and from children. “If you look at the data, the spread among children and from children is not really very big at all, not like one would have suspected,” he said.

GOP lawmakers asked the CDC what specific scientific studies they based their recommendations on and what steps are they taking to track the latest scientific studies on the contraction and transmission of COVID-19 among children.

Parents are also grilling the Board of Education for making young children wear masks and socially distance in school despite little evidence that kids can contract or spread COVID-19.

Courtney Ann Taylor a mother in Georgia, is one of the many parents who’ve had it with mask mandates and slammed school board members at a meeting on April 15 for the mandates. She started a change.org petion to make masks optional for children in Gwinnett County Public Schools and wrote that it is the parent’s responsibility to make health decisions for their children.

“The parents decide which pediatrician they see and which vaccines they receive, so they also decide if their child is going to cover their nose and mouth. Stop trying to parent our children for us,” the petition reads.

The radical left school board members and lawmakers keep saying that have to “get the numbers lower” and that it’s “still not safe” but have refused to give straight answers on the goalposts they keep moving. Then, they demonize those who actually ask these questions. The socialist agenda is designed to keep you in fear and distracted from critical thinking, rather than asking why children need cloth covers over their face all day for a disease that does not affect them.
