Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics (CREW), a left-leaning activist group, is trying convince Apple to remove Truth Social from its stores, just like Trump-backed apps were made available to all iPhone users.
CREW President Noah Bookbinder sent a long personal appeal to Apple CEO Tim Cook asking him to remove Truth Social. The app currently ranks No. The app is currently No. 1 in the most downloaded apps.
Bookbinder wrote, “In light Trump’s past history of undermining democracy and encouraging violent extremism and his use of social media platforms to do it, and his apparent desire for the Truth Social platform, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (“CREW”) to continue doing so, I urge you to delete the application from Apple App Store.”
Bookbinder stated that it was incumbent on all companies to not support those who undermine democracy. Your company is particularly well-positioned to combat disinformation, protect democracy from imminent danger, and to do so, Bookbinder also said. Apple’s promise to “stand for democracy” and stop extremist content promotion is fulfilled by removing the Truth Social platform from Apple’s App Store.
Bookbinder also blamed Facebook and Twitter for allowing “January 6, insurrectionists to organize” and noted that Google took swift action to remove Parler’s Google Play Store account after January 6 and Apple “quickly copied.”
Cook was then warned by Bookbinder of “significant repetitional risk” to his business.
CREW repeatedly tweeted the letter from its Twitter account. CREW tweeted that Trump should not be allowed to return on Twitter in light of Elon Musk buying Twitter.
Bookbinder stated earlier this week that Trump will not be rejoining Twitter. “It’s more important than ever that Apple remove Truth Social (as @CREWcrew requested) from the App Store, because it legitimizes Trump’s anti-democratic behavior.”
CREW launched a failed ethics case against Devin Nunes, CEO of Trump Media & Technology Group, when he was chairman of the House Intelligence Committee in 2017. Nunes was cleared of any ethics violations in December 2017.
