The city of New York is once again proving why they are mandating themselves out of a willing population with their newest vaccine orders handed down from on high.
Though almost anyone would admit that public safety is within the civil government’s domain of responsibility, there is a reason that the Founding Fathers warned that if we trade safety for liberty we’ll lose both. THat reason is that corrupt politicians will always leverage fear, and that’s exactly what is happening in New York City with Mayor Bill de Blasio, according to the Independent Journal Review.
Let’s first get this out of the way: Any person who wishes to take a treatment for an illness, whether they have it or don’t, experimental or not, is within their rights and privileges to do so. In fact, it’s often sacrificial people who take experiments into proven science. However, in much the same way we cannot allow forced drug experiments, or even proven effective treatments, like abortions, we cannot allow for the government to get involved in medical treatment. But that’s just what they’re doing.
In the case of New York City they have made a vaccine mandate for public school teachers and staff saying that there is no way for them to opt-out of the COVID-19 vaccine and still retain their jobs, per a statement from de Blasio on Monday:
“Today, the New York City Department of Health will be issuing an order requiring all staff in the New York City Public Schools to be vaccinated. This will require that all staff of every kind, principles, teachers, custodians, food service, you name it, needs to have at least one dose by Sept. 27,” he added.
Sadly, this encompasses roughly 148,000 employees of the New York City schools and does not offer any leeway or wiggle room for those who have objections to the vaccines that may be pushed off on government employees in the city of New York.
Similar mandates have stated that teachers and other staffers can opt for regular testing and/or masking to attempt to prevent the spread of COVID-19. But not the Big Apple. Nay nay, it’s time that employees shape up or ship out in the world of New York schools.
This news comes as the FDA approved one of the multiple vaccines, thereby, supposedly, removing the objections that many have had to the vaccines. However, while that could assuage the issues for many, there’s still the issue of whether, even if safe, the government can mandate that a person without having committed any crime or been found to have any sort of illness, be treated for something that has a 99% survival rate.
“Mr. de Blasio said on Monday that broad vaccine mandates for eligible students are ‘not on the table.’ On Friday, the city said that about 20,000 high school athletes who participate in high-risk sports like basketball and football will have to be vaccinated by the start of their sports seasons,” the Times added.
So here’s the question: if there were no doubts about the vaccine, and every person, save one, believes it were the absolute right thing to do, would it be constitutional? Many believe no. In fact, many who jumped at the chance to get the vaccine still believe there are no circumstances under which it should be forced on people like so many cattle in danger of getting a disease that might lessen the owner’s profits.
The mandate isn’t altogether unexpected, however, as de Blasio announced earlier in the month that the city would look to implement vaccine mandates for both employees of indoor dining, fitness, entertainment, and performance establishments as well as the employees of those private businesses.
“This is a miraculous place, literally full of wonders. And if you’re vaccinated, all that’s going to open up to you, you’ll have the key you can open the door,” he said as he announced the mandate.
He added, “If you’re unvaccinated, unfortunately, you will not be able to participate in many things. That’s the point we’re trying to get across. It’s time for people to see vaccination as literally necessary to living a good and full and healthy life.”
So much for land of the free.
