Tim Scott, the only Black Republican Senator, recently pushed back against the notion that the United States was a fundamentally “racist country” in his response to President Biden’s joint address to Congress. He said it is wrong for Democrats to push the narrative that the country is racist and its core and use the past to shut down any present debate.
In his GOP response to President Biden’s speech, Sen. Scott shared that kids today are being taught that the color of their skin defines them. He said colleges and corporations are making money and gaining power by creating a culture that pretends we haven’t made any progress and doubling down on the divisions we’ve worked so hard to heal from.
“You know this stuff is wrong. Hear me clearly: America is not a racist country. It’s backward to fight discrimination with different discrimination. And it’s wrong to try to use our painful past to dishonestly shut down debates in the present,” Sen. Scott said.
Radical left critics attacked Scott’s speech and claimed he was “defending white supremacy” by declaring that the U.S wasn’t racist. CNN commentator Van Jones said Scott lost “tens of millions” of Black voters by claiming America was not struggling with racism. Other left-wing activists such as Toure Neblett, Robert Reich, and Marc Lamont Hill, all railed against Scott. Some even went so far as to call him “Uncle Tim,” a direct reference to the “Uncle Tom” character from the novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Uncle Tom is considered a subservient character in the book.
The term “Uncle Tim” trended on Twitter for twelve hours before the Big Tech platform decided to remove the content. When media outlets asked Twitter why it took them so long to remove the racial slur, a spokesperson blamed the “algorithm” for not catching it in the first place. As far as accountability goes, Democrats have failed to call out members of their own party for launching shamefully racist attacks against Tim Scott.
Even though Sen. Scott was heavily criticized and attacked for his comments, radical-left activists grew silent when Vice President Kamala Harris agreed with Sen. Scott’s statement that “America is not a racist country.”
During a recent ABC’s “Good Morning America” interview, VP Harris shared with host George Stephanopoulos that she agreed with Sen. Scott on a number of things and that the idea is to “unify the country” with truth and accountability instead of using the past to shut down debate. She also praised President Biden for referring to white supremacy as “terrorism” during his speech and one of “the most lethal threats to our homeland today.”
“Well first of all, no, I don’t think America is a racist country, but we also do have to speak the truth about the history of racism in our country and its existence today. And I applaud the president for always having the ability and the courage frankly to speak the truth about it,” VP Harris said.
Vice President Harris initially said the same thing and has not received the same number of attacks and threats as Scott – or anything remotely close. None of the leftists who attacked Scott have attacked Harris. She also agreed with Scott that glossing over or canceling issues does not help the country unify and heal.
But even today, Democrats are always playing the race card and forcing racism into everyday issues to divide the country further. It’s interesting to see VP Harris praising Tim Scott’s comments when she filibustered a vote last year on his police reform bill. Taking action is never as important as a political win to the radical left. Kamala Harris only got a “pass” for her bad acting in politics.
